Earlier today, the Kandy team announced it has been selected by an amazing new company, TeleMedCo into an emergency room platform powered by IBM Watson’s cognitive processing capabilities.
The medical doctor behind the vision is Dr. Tina Miranda, who is not only a practicing emergency room physician, but a leader in the anti-aging industry and entrepreneur in her own right. She has partnered with co-founder Barry Solomon, a former executive of the National Broadcasting Company and an Emmy award winning television producer / writer, who helped develop and sold two telecommunications network design companies to public companies, to build the world’s first integrated digital platform making emergency rooms much more efficient with shorter wait times and better outcomes.
Dr. Ronald Klatz, MD, DO joined in the effort, bringing his thirty five years of experience in medical innovation, business development, and biotech funding to the team. Dr. Klatz also serves as President of the American Academy of Anti-aging Medicine (A4M), a society of 28,000 physicians and scientists leading the clinical specialty of regenerative prevention and anti-aging solutions.
It is in fact “an emergency” given that ERs are becoming even more over-crowded, medical care becoming even more expensive, and doctors and care teams becoming even more stretched, as evidenced by the facts.
TeleMedCo’s initial target will be hospitals which operate emergency rooms, companies which contract to run emergency rooms in multiple hospitals, and urgent care centers.
There are 5,025 emergency rooms in the United States and 9,300 stand-alone urgent care centers with 50 to 100 more opening annually. In 2011 there were 136.3 million visits to emergency rooms in the United States. This is at a rate of 421 ER admissions per 1000 population of the US. As the population grows there will be increased strain on emergency and urgent care.
Of these visits:
- 1.2% required immediate care
- 10.7% required emergent care
- 42.3% required urgent care
- 45.7% required lower levels of care or none at all
With TeleMedCo, powered by IBM Watson, nearly one out of two visits could be handled in a Watson supported environment nearly end to end.
Dr. Miranda’s deep understanding of ER protocols, and years of experience operating in the real world, fast paced environment in some of the best hospitals in the US, means she is uniquely qualified to develop the software including algorithms which interface with IBM Watson as well as many different systems including electronic medical records, digital imaging, labs, and more.
Where Kandy comes in is when a real time consult – let’s say with the top cardiologist specializing in a rare heart disease – receives a text alert so he or she can instantly consult even if half way around the world. If that cardiologist is not available, the system can hunt for the next available specialist.
In addition to her M.D., Dr. Miranda also holds an M.B.A. which has helped drive her success in the anti-aging industry.
Dr. Miranda graduated from the Health Science Center at Brooklyn at the State University of New York, completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Staten Island University Hospital in New York City, and is certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. Before attending medical and business school, Dr. Miranda graduated with a degree in Chemistry from the Barnard College at Columbia University.
She has worked in emergency rooms in New York, New Jersey, Minnesota, Montana, and South Florida, and in 2006 went into private practice dedicated to comprehensive anti-aging medicine. She is currently founder and Medical Director of Rejuvenate Doctor.
With extraordinary and seemingly limitless energy, Dr. Miranda extends herself beyond the traditional medical world as well. She has worked as a Healthcare Consultant for the National Basketball Association, providing care for the NBA players in Barcelona, Spain.
With years of experience working in often over-crowded and stressed emergency rooms, she grew passionate about developing a solution to the long wait times and administrative challenges in the life-saving ER environment, and today TeleMedCo is well on its way with a working prototype of the platform already interfacing seamlessly with IBM Watson.
We are so proud to have TeleMedCo and Dr. Miranda’s dream with us this week at our Perspectives event.
